چکیده

We have created new dust temperature and column density maps of Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens using 60 and 100 μm data from the IRIS recalibration of IRAS data. We describe an optimized method for finding the dust temperature, emissivity spectral index, and optical depth using optical and NIR extinction maps. The creation of these temperature and extinction maps (covering tens of square degrees of molecular clouds) is one of the first results from the ongoing COordinated Molecular Probe Line Extinction Thermal Emission (COMPLETE) Survey of Star Forming regions. However, while the extinctions derived from the IRIS emission maps are globally accurate, we warn that FIR emission is not a good proxy for extinction on the scale of one pixel (∼5). In addition to describing the global dust properties of these clouds, we have found two particularly interesting features in the column density and temperature maps. In the Ophiuchus dark cloud complex, the new dust temperature map shows a little known warm (25K) dust ring with 2 pc diameter. This shell is approximately centered on the B star ρ-Ophiuchus, 1 north of the well-studied ρ-Oph star-forming cluster. In Perseus, the column density map shows a 10 pc diameter ring, a feature not apparent in the filamentary chain of clouds seen in molecular gas. These rings are further discussed in detail in companion papers to this one. Subject headings: ISM: clouds — dust, extinction — surveys

Dust Emission from the Perseus Molecular Cloud

Using far-infrared emission maps taken by IRAS and Spitzer and a near-infrared extinction map derived from 2MASS data, we have made dust temperature and column density maps of the Perseus molecular cloud. We show that the emission from transiently heated very small grains (VSGs) and the big grain dust emissivity vary as a function of extinction and dust temperature, with higher dust emissivitie...

Maps of Dust IR Emission for Use in Estimation of Reddeningand CMBR

We present a full sky 100m map that is a reprocessed composite of the COBE/DIRBE and IRAS/ISSA maps, with the zodiacal foreground and connrmed point sources removed. Before using the ISSA maps, we remove the remaining artifacts from the IRAS scan pattern. Using the DIRBE 100m and 240m data, we have constructed a map of the dust temperature, so that the 100m map may be converted to a map proport...

Maps of Dust IR Emission for Use in Estimation of Reddening and CMBR Foregrounds

We present a full sky 100μm map that is a reprocessed composite of the COBE/DIRBE and IRAS/ISSA maps, with the zodiacal foreground and confirmed point sources removed. Before using the ISSA maps, we remove the remaining artifacts from the IRAS scan pattern. Using the DIRBE 100μm and 240μm data, we have constructed a map of the dust temperature, so that the 100μm map can be converted to a map pr...

The Complete Nature of the Warm Dust Shell in Perseus

The Perseus molecular cloud complex is ak30 pc long chain of molecular clouds most well known for the two star-forming clusters NGC 1333 and IC 348 and the well-studied outflow source in B5. However, when studied at midto far-infrared wavelengths, the region is dominated by a 10 pc diameter shell of warm dust, likely generated by an H ii region caused by the early-B star HD 278942. Using a revi...

CO isotopologues in the Perseus Molecular Cloud Complex: the X-factor and regional variations

The COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming regions offers an unusually comprehensive and diverse set of measurements of the distribution and temperature of dust and gas in molecular clouds, and in this paper we use those data to find new calibrations of the “X-factor” and the 13CO abundance within Perseus. To carry out our analysis, we: 1) apply the NICER (Near-Infrared Color Excess Method Revisited) ...
